Walking now-familiar stretches of sand in Mulubinba (Newcastle) and it’s surrounds, I come across some interesting objects carried to shore by the waves. Some of my favourite finds are weathered-down pieces of driftwood, edges curved over time by sea, sun and wind. This particular piece is very solid and was heavier still when I carried it home, throughly soaked in sea water and only just beginning the slow process of drying out. It spent a few weeks on my sunny balcony before being painted with 60s style geometric shapes referencing flowers, stars, the sun and waves alongside looser late-50s style atomic patterns. It calls to mind humble beach shacks, vinyl outdoor lounge chairs, plastic blow up pool floats and brightly-patterned board shorts.

This work is fixed with d-hooks and hanging wire, however due to the weight (about 5kg) I wouldn’t recommend hanging on a typical wall without researching this first. Alternatively, the work can sit leaning against the wall or another solid object, or lie flat.
